A Uniform Search for Nearby Planetary Companions to Hot Jupiters in TESS Data Reveals Hot Jupiters Are Still Lonely

چکیده
We present the results of a uniform search for additional planets around all stars with confirmed hot Jupiters observed by Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in its Cycle 1 survey southern ecliptic hemisphere. Our comprises 184 total planetary systems $R_{p}$ > 8$R_\oplus$ and orbital period < 10 days. The Transit Least Squares (TLS) algorithm was utilized to periodic signals that may have been missed other planet pipelines. While we recovered 169 these Jupiters, our yielded no new statistically-validated candidates parameter space searched (P 14 days). A lack nearby TESS data supports from previous transit searches each individual system, now down photometric precision TESS. This is consistent expectations high eccentricity migration formation scenario, but indicators are needed definitive confirmation. injected into light curves Jupiter sample probe pipeline's sensitivity target space, finding dependence proportional $R_{p}^{2.32}P^{-0.88}$ within 0.3$\leq$$R_{p}$$\leq$4 $R_\oplus$ 1$\leq$$P$$\leq$14 statistical analysis accounting this provides median $90\%$ confidence interval $7.3\substack{+15.2 \\ -7.3}\%$ rate companions space. study demonstrates how uniquely enables comprehensive nearly known Jupiters.

The STARE Project: A Transit Search for Hot Jupiters
The STARE instrument is a small aperture, wide-field, CCDbased telescope that delivers high cadence time series photometry on roughly 40 000 stars in a typical field centered on the galactic plane. In a two-month observing run on a field, we obtain sufficient precision on roughly 4 000 stars to detect a close-in Jupiter-sized companion in an edge-on orbit. We also used this instrument to detect...
متن کاملAtmospheric escape from hot Jupiters
The extra-solar planet HD209458b has been found to have an extended atmosphere of escaping atomic hydrogen (Vidal-Madjar et al. 2003), suggesting that “hot Jupiters” closer to their parent stars could evaporate. Here we estimate the atmospheric escape (so called evaporation rate) from hot Jupiters and their corresponding life time against evaporation. The calculated evaporation rate of HD209458...
متن کاملTwo Classes of Hot Jupiters
We identify two classes of transiting planet, based on their equilibrium temperatures and Safronov numbers. We examine various possible explanations for the dichotomy. It may reflect the influence of planet or planetesimal scattering in determining when planetary migration stops. Another possibility is that some planets lose more mass to evaporation than others. If this evaporation process pref...
متن کاملStatus and Prospects of Planetary Transit Searches: Hot Jupiters Galore
The first transiting extrasolar planet, orbiting HD 209458, was a Doppler wobble planet before its transits were discovered with a 10 cm CCD camera. Wide-angle CCD cameras, by monitoring in parallel the light curves of tens of thousands of stars, should find hot Jupiter transits much faster than the Doppler wobble method. The discovery rate could easily rise by a factor 10. The sky holds perhap...
متن کاملObliquity Tides on Hot Jupiters
Obliquity tides are a potentially important source of heat for extrasolar planets on close-in orbits. Although tidal dissipation will usually reduce the obliquity to zero, a nonzero obliquity can persist if the planet is in a Cassini state, a resonance between spin precession and orbital precession. Obliquity tides might be the cause of the anomalously large size of the transiting planet HD 209...
